If you plan on having a flower girl in your bridal party, you are guaranteed to have fun helping them pick out a picture-perfect wedding day dress. And just as bridalwear trends change and evolve each season, so too do flower girl dress styles. We are currently seeing an increase in modern and very fashionable looks within the space, including pieces with ornate sleeves, three-dimensional floral embellishments, and voluminous, twirl-worthy skirts.

“Frothy layers are a huge trend,” says Lori Conley, general merchandising manager for BHLDN. “Tulle is still the most popular fabric when it comes to flower girl dress styles because it’s so airy and dreamy. Delicate floral blooms like those we are seeing on wedding dresses are also popular, as are statement sleeves. Though tank styles continue to be beloved for flower girl dresses, we’re seeing them in a fresh new way with the addition of sweet little ruffles and floaty feathers.”

Meet the Expert

Lori Conley is the general merchandising manager for BHLDN. She has a decade of experience in bridalwear and is one of the industry’s leading style experts.

Conley also notes that color is trending with blush being a favorite shade at the moment. “There is nothing cuter than adding a blush-hued flower girl dress into the mix of your bridal party. I also love mixing and matching those dresses. I love to see a gaggle of girls in different frothy confections to make a bridal party feel interesting.”

What to Look for in a Modern Flower Girl Dress

When considering flower girl dresses, make comfort a key consideration. Conley advises steering clear of high necklines which are an instant irritant for most kids. Alternatively, she loves smocking details as the added element of stretch in a flower girl dress means your special little can move easily throughout the day and dance the night away.

FAQ

  • Flower girls shouldn’t need to worry about wrangling their dresses as they walk down the aisle. Just above the knee length, or midi length looks are best.

  • As noted, mixing and matching is a huge trend for flower girls just as it is for bridesmaids. Older children will be able to handle a little more detailing with their dresses, so you can choose designs with more embellishments. For the young ones, keep the styles simple so they don’t fuss with them.

  • Conley notes that you should keep the age of your flower girl in mind when determining accessories, as some might get overwhelmed by wearing too many things. Some of her current favorites include an oversize bow hairband or delicate crown.
