Coronation Street airs wedding twist for Emma and Curtis

Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Wedding bells have never sounded more somber as Coronation Street’s Emma Brooker and Curtis Delamere’s nuptials were cut short by the police.

On tonight’s (December 20) double bill, Emma (Alexandra Mardell) and Curtis (Sam Retford) were getting ready to tie the knot in a pink-themed wedding.

As the ceremony was fast approaching, Emma feared she was making a mistake after discovering Curtis’s factitious disorder. But Gemma (Dolly-Rose Campbell) reassured her, telling her friend that, as long as she loved Curtis, marrying him was not going to be a mistake.

Meanwhile, Emma’s father Steve (Simon Gregson) told Amy (Elle Mulvaney) that he’d given Curtis his bank card to transfer the charity money but the charity never received it.

Then, Amy confessed that Curtis was a pathological liar. She said he had lied about having a life-threatening condition and had probably stolen the money, t00.

This revelation prompted Steve and Amy to go check on Curtis at the apartment, which they found empty. As the two looked around, they realised the groom was preparing to flee the country.

Amy then explained Curtis’s condition to her stepfather. Factitious disorder is a disorder in which someone deceives others by appearing sick or by purposely getting sick.

“She loves him, she wants to help him,” Amy said about Emma and Curtis.

“He’s got a mental health problem,” she continued.

At the wedding venue, Curtis, Steve and Amy were still missing. Right when Emma started to believe that Curtis had pulled a runner, the groom finally showed up.

“I thought you were leaving me,” Emma told Curtis.

“I would never do that,” he replied, before saying that she looked “incredible” in her wedding dress.

They decided to go ahead with the ceremony after Tracy (Kate Ford) offered to give the bride away in Steve’s place.

But Steve and Amy barged in with a police officer accusing Curtis of having stolen £100k destined to the charity.

“Curtis, tell me this is a mistake,” a heartbroken Emma said.

He admitted having lied about his health, and was taken down to the police station for questioning.

“I am so sorry, if you had gone through with it you would have regretted it,” Steve told Emma.

“Well I’ll never know now, will I?” she replied in tears, clutching her flower bouquet.

At the station, Curtis was adamant he hadn’t stolen the money. He also added he was trying to get help for his disorder.

“I swear I transferred that money into the account,” Curtis told the police.

Later on, he went to see Emma to explain what really happened.

“I hadn’t lied to you, not when I said that I love you,” he told her, saying that he had packed a suitcase not to leave but to go on their surprise honeymoon.

“I am staying at my dad’s tonight. And when I get home, I want you gone,” Emma said coldly.

In the final minutes of the episode, Steve received a phone call. He found out that the money hadn’t reached the charity due to a “technical fault”.

However, he decided to keep this from Emma, telling her she had done the right thing by calling off the wedding. Will she find out the truth?

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 7.30pm on ITV.
