D.C. AG Sues Wedding Venue for Not Issuing Refunds for Pandemic Cancellations

D.C.’s attorney general is suing a wedding venue in the city for not providing refunds or rescheduling events canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Loft at 600 F, which conducts business as DC Event Hub and rents out its venue for weddings and other events, charged from $3,500 to over $10,000 per event, and customers required to pay in full 90 days ahead of their event, WTTG-TV (Channel 5) reported.

The company’s contracts include a clause saying if the event cannot be held for reasons beyond the control of the customers, the event can be rescheduled or a refund will be issued.

The attorney general’s lawsuit said The Loft didn’t respond to customers who made down payments of more than $10,000 and sought to reschedule their weddings after they were canceled due to the pandemic.

Additionally, the suit said the company promised to reschedule an event for one customer but didn’t respond to numerous calls and emails, WTTG reported.

D.C. Attorney General Karl A. Racine wants restitution and damages for the victims and as well as punitive damages for violating the city’s consumer protection laws.

The Loft issued a statement to WTTG saying it has “complied with all D.C. mandates related to COVID-19 in a shutdown of business.”
