DJ Company Reveals Top Songs Couples Don’t Want Played at Their Weddings

A New Jersey-based DJ company has revealed in a now-viral video the songs that appear most frequently on wedding couples’ “do not play” lists, and online opinions are split.

The video was posted to TikTok last week by POSH DJs. So far, the post has received more than 480,000 views and over 31,000 likes.

“Here are the most popular songs put on the ‘do not play’ list at weddings in the past year,” said POSH DJs at the beginning of the video.

“Cha Cha Slide,” “Cupid Shuffle” and “Cotton Eye Joe” were the top three songs on the list with 81, 59 and 50 requests, respectively.

“That’s no surprise,” explained POSH DJs. “We tell our clients that we try to stay away from line dances at weddings—it’s just not our style.”

Other songs on the list were Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline,” the Village People’s “Y.M.C.A.” and “I Gotta Feeling” by the Black Eyed Peas.

Additionally, the entire country genre was put on the list.

“We operate out of New Jersey, so that’s not really a big surprise,” added POSH DJs.

When it comes to curating a wedding playlist, Spotify Trends expert Shanon Cook said that couples should be considerate of their guests.

“At a wedding, you have a very broad list—from your grandparents to guests as young as 2. You have to think about music that is not only appropriate for that varied audience but also what they’re going to like and get into,” Cook told Brides.

To do this, she recommended that guests add “popular” songs such as Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” and Bruno Mars’ “Marry You.”

She also encouraged couples to embrace a variety of genres.

“It’s all about what makes people happy and puts them in the mood to dance. It makes sense that you’re going to have the full spectrum,” Cook said.

Every couple’s playlist will be different, said Brides, something that was made abundantly clear by the opposing viewpoints expressed by POSH DJs’s commenters.

Some viewers couldn’t comprehend how some of their favorite songs wound up on couples’ “do not play” lists.

“Do people … hate joy?” asked l.jhendricks.

“That’s a no from me. I’m white and rely solely on line dances,” wrote Abbey Dunn.

“Nah why is the best song ever (‘Yeah!’ by Usher) on this list,” said mars.

“Not allowing Earth, Wind and Fire should be illegal,” commented kay.

Others, on the other hand, were happy to see certain songs and artists on the lists.

“This is the best ‘do not play’ list I’ve ever seen! ‘Cupid Shuffle’ came out in 2009, way past time to retire that. Journey is overplayed so much,” opined Caesar Guerini Fan.

“I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO HATED BRUNO MARS AND ‘HAPPY’ BY PHARRELL. They were the first on my ‘do not play’ list,” shared Sarah Hoffman.
