Groom jailed, child bride separated

A mobile court has ordered 15-day imprisonment for a day labourer, Ibrahim Ali, in Nandigram, Bogra for marrying an underage girl.

The 14-year-old bride, a class VII schoolgirl, was sent to her father’s house on the condition that she would continue her study and would be brought to her in-laws’ house after she turns 18.

Local municipal councillors and school teachers have been asked to monitor the girl’s education and implementation of the order.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shifa Nusrat’s mobile court gave the sentence at Ibrahim’s house in Omarpur area on Thursday night after learning about the marriage that took place recently.

Ibrahim committed a crime under the Prevention of Child Marriage Act of 2017, the UNO said.

“The girl was sent to her father’s house. Besides, Nandigram police station sent Ibrahim Ali to Bogra Jail,” she said, adding that the campaign against child marriage would continue.
