Idris Elba Reveals Meghan Markle’s Song Requests for Her Royal Wedding to Prince Harry

British actor Idris Elba is a man of many talents. At the May 2018 wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, he even guest DJ’d a set for the royal couple’s private reception, and he recently revealed a bit more about that experience. This past weekend on the BBC Radio 1Extra Rap Show, host Tiffany Calver asked, “What is the vibe of a Harry and Meghan wedding?” she asked. “What tune was the one that got everyone going crazy?”

Elba said that guests “went off” when he played “I Want to Dance with Somebody” by Whitney Houston, and Meghan herself personally requested “Still D.R.E.” by Dr. Dre featuring Snoop Dogg—and it was a hit.

Calver replied, “I knew I liked them.”

This isn’t the first time the British actor has shared some of the songs he played on their big day. “Meghan sent me a playlist with some bare tunes on it,” Elba told 1Xtra in 2019, saying, “There was some West Coast on it.”

“I try not to talk too much about it, because it was a private day, but it remains one of the highlights of my life, for sure,” he told The Guardian. “It was a beautiful experience, like all weddings are.”

Last year, Markle spoke about her royal wedding during her sit-down interview with Oprah Winfrey.

“I’ve thought about this a lot because it was like having an out-of-body experience I was very present for,” she said. “That’s the only way I can describe it because the night before I slept through the night entirely, which in and of itself is a bit of a miracle. And then woke up and started listening to that song ‘Going to the Chapel.’ And just tried to make it fun and light and remind ourselves that this was our day — but I think we were both really aware, even in advance of that just, this wasn’t our day. This was the day that was planned for the world.”
