There’s something about weddings that tends to stir up unresolved family issues.

Katy Gathright, the writer of this week’s Modern Love essay, had hoped that wedding planning would be a bonding experience for her and her mother. However, with each passing bridal milestone, their relationship seemed to only grow more distant as her mother accepted the dissolution of her own marriage to Ms. Gathright’s father.
