While trends in bridesmaid dresses have changed over the years, one thing has remained the same: A bridesmaid should never outshine the bride. 

Perhaps a justification for the latest findings that the most popular bridesmaid dress color is the muted shade of grey.

Fashion experts at global retailer Boohoo analyzed Google Trends data to evaluate which colors are most popular in each of the states, and found that eleven states – including California, New York and Florida – search grey over any other.

‘Finding the perfect bridesmaid dresses for your bridal crew can be a mixture of trial and error, and when factoring in your bridal parties’ different looks, it can be daunting to know where to start,’ said a Boohoo spokesperson.

‘However, using Google or social media is a sure way of finding inspiration and this data offers a fascinating insight into which color of bridesmaid dress are favored across America, as well as showing the significance of both traditional and current fashion trends.’

Grey is subtle in tone; it’s lovely across a variety of wedding themes and allows for the focus to be on the bride.

In addition to California, New York and Florida, brides in Alaska, Illinois, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Michigan also sought out the muted shade for their maids.

A grey dress can be worn with just about anything. That said, when paired with metallic shoes and accessories, it will come off looking high-end and expensive.

The states which are solely looking for a green bridesmaid dresses are North Dakota and Vermont.

Sage, emerald and olive are the most popular bridesmaid dress options in two or more states; with the Google search for ‘sage bridesmaid dresses’ increasing 476% since January and most popular in Arizona, Maine, Montana and Utah.

Another green shade of bridesmaid dress that has proven popularity is emerald. A perfect jewel tone for fall and winter months, it is the most searched dress color by residents in Arkansas and Connecticut. 

Less rich than emerald is olive, a shade preferred by brides who want something subtle. Both Wisconsin and Pennsylvania prefer olive bridesmaid dresses over any other color or shade.

Lucky for bridesmaids, a green dress can be paired with every color of the rainbow.

Seven states searched for the color more than any other, including Idaho, Maryland, Mississippi, New Mexico, South Carolina, Virginia and Washington.

Terracotta, is popular with brides in Minnesota and Texas. Apricot, rust and mandarin are also a go-to search.

Blue bridesmaid dresses come out on top in Hawaii, while surprisingly, Missouri is the only state searching for maroon colored bridesmaid dresses.

Other shades that are favored across America and remain the most popular in only one state each are yellow in Georgia and peach in Nevada.
