Olivia Rodrigo Has Something in Common With Carrie Bradshaw

Olivia Rodrigo is still a teenager, but her music career is off and running. The “Drivers License” singer is nominated for a staggering seven Grammy Awards this year and is a front runner to take home at least a couple of statues. She was also invited to perform at the event. Rodrigo appears to be channeling the fictional Carrie Bradshaw with her style choice on one of the most important nights of her life.

Rodrigo appeared on the red carpet looking stunning in a black dress with pink illusion beading. The column dress was custom designed by Vivienne Westwood.

Rodrigo told E! that she was looking for something young and fun when picking out her gown. She noted that she also wanted a touch of glamor for the event. She paired the dress with opera gloves and a chocker to pull everything together.

Carrie Bradshaw wore Vivienne Westwood in ‘Sex and the City: The Movie’

Vivienne Westwood has a long and storied fashion career. Still, the famed designer is most tightly linked to Sex and the City: The Movie. In the 2008 flick, Carrie married her longtime love, Mr. Big. Before Carrie said “I do” in a labelless white suit, she had bigger plans.

An exquisite Vivienne Westwood wedding gown was a part of a Vogue photoshoot ahead of her wedding date. In the film, Westwood gifted the gown to Carrie after seeing the photos. The dress also “upped the ante,” as Carrie put it, and led to the massive guest list that eventually gave Mr. Big cold feet.

Olivia Rodrigo once said she and her best friend are like Carrie and Samantha

Rodrigo’s Grammy connection to Carrie Bradshaw isn’t the first time she’s conjured up a Sex and the City reference. The 19-year-old songstress compared herself and her best friend, Iris Apatow, to Carrie and Samantha Jones.

In a 2021 interview with Vice, Rodrigo said, “I think we’re Carrie and Samantha from Sex And The City. We are dramatic, fiercely loyal, and we both love going to brunch.” Actor, Apatow, also 19, is the daughter of Judd Apatow and Leslie Mann. She is best known for her work in Knocked Up, and This is 40.

A Vivienne Westwood design has made waves at the Grammy Awards before

While Rodrigo’s Vivienne Westwood gown is a stunning addition to the 64th Annual Grammy Awards, the column dress isn’t the only clothing item from the designer that has made it onto the red carpet. Pharrell Williams made waves at the Grammys in 2014 with a Vivienne Westwood piece. Williams rocked a Buffalo Hat that got everyone talking.

The hat stole the show and was a point of discussion on Twitter in the days following the red carpet. Even Arby’s got in on the conversation. The fast-food company tweeted about it, asking if they could have their hat back when Williams was done with it.
