Plot, Cast and Everything Else We Know

Amazon Prime Video is set to bring us the latest action-packed rom-com, starring actors Jennifer Lopez and Josh Duhamel. Shotgun Wedding promises to give viewers a very different wedding experience. Instead of the pristine white dresses, get-lost-in-your-eyes first dances, and fantastic toasts, Shotgun Wedding is supposed to give viewers anxiety and excitement for the most non-wedding reasons. Characterized by a mud-stained bride, dirt-stained wedding dress, and blood-streaked, sweaty groom, viewers look to be in for quite a rough ride in the latest destination wedding.

Shotgun Wedding is directed by Jason Moore, while the screenplay is written by Mark Hammer and Elizabeth Meriwether. Moore has previously worked on the Pitch Perfect series, while Hammer has worked on projects such as Two Night Stand, starring Analeigh Tipton and Miles Teller. Meriwether has New Girl and No Strings Attached tucked under her belt. Shotgun Wedding has made quite a few headlines since planning for the movie started. While some details are a bit obscure as of now, here’s all we know about the wedding of a lifetime.

A destination wedding goes wrong in all ways possible in the narrative of Shotgun Wedding. Despite attempting to pull off a successful event, the couple gets cold feet at the last moment. In keeping with the trend of rom-coms, the search for their families and the adventure attached to it rekindle the fire between the couple. Discovering the reasons behind the start of their relationship and what motivated them to fall in love in the first place, the couple goes back to their roots, embodying the true meaning of ‘till death do us part’ as they navigate dangerous situations to save their families.

Shotgun Wedding: The Cast

Shotgun Wedding has a significantly noteworthy cast with many famous names on its confirmed list. Jennifer Lopez and Josh Duhamel take on the lead roles as Tom and Darcy, the soon-to-be husband and wife. Other names in the praise-worthy supporting cast include Lenny Kravitz, who will play Sean, D’Arcy Carden as Harriet, Selena Tan as Marge, Héctor Aníbal as Bone face, and Alberto Isaac as Ace. Jennifer Coolidge and Sônia Braga have also been confirmed, though their roles in the film have not yet been announced. Lenny Kravitz, speaking of his experience working with Lopez, took to his Instagram to say:

“Jennifer, after knowing each other for so many years we finally got to work and be creative together. It was an experience that I will always cherish. Love and respect. Xxx #ShotgunWedding”

It’s not only Kravitz who has had praise for Jennifer Lopez. Her on-screen husband-to-be had quite a few words of praise for her. Talking to People (The TV Show!), Duhamel said he “had one of the most fun times ever making” the action-packed rom-com. He further added that “J.Lo is, like, a … she is a boss. In the best way,” and said that he had one of the most fun times with her during production of the movie.

Casting Exits

Armie Hammer 20th Century Studios

The grooms in Shotgun Wedding have constantly kept shotgunning out of the cast list before Duhamel finally landed the role and decided to stick with it. As per The Hollywood Reporter, actor Ryan Reynolds was initially cast for the role of Tom in 2019. However, it was then assigned to Armie Hammer. Despite Hammer’s casting, in January 2021, Variety reported that Hammer was also to be recast in the film owing to a social media controversy.

Making a statement regarding unverified Instagram direct messages, apparently written by Hammer and containing explicit sexual content, posted online and his decision to step away from the production of Shotgun Wedding, Hammer said:

“I’m not responding to these bulls**t claims but in light of the vicious and spurious online attacks against me, I cannot in good conscience now leave my children for 4 months to shoot a film in the Dominican Republic. Lionsgate is supporting me in this and I’m grateful to them for that”

Given the controversy with Hammer and his decision to exit the film, Lionsgate did quick work in casting Josh Duhamel for the role. It looks like the third time was the charm for Lionsgate! Although the groom’s cast for the film has a long history, bride Jennifer Lopez hasn’t had any issues with her role in the movie. Talking of Duhamel and Lopez, Erin Westerman, president of production for Lionsgate, said:

“We know Josh and Jennifer will make a compelling and sexy on-screen couple and they will be fun sparring partners as their dream destination wedding erupts into a memorable nightmare.”

Release Date

Shotgun Wedding was scheduled for theatrical release on June 29, 2022. However, the USA rights for the film were later sold to Amazon Prime Video. Following the sale, the movie is skipping its theatrical release and heading directly to Amazon Prime. At the time of writing, no official release date for the film has been set. But, fingers crossed, we get to see Duhamel and Lopez in action soon!
