During a recent documentary to celebrate his life, the royal family revealed the many talents of the late Prince Philip.

And his granddaughter Princess Eugenie said that he put one of his little-known skills into practice to make her a touching homemade wedding gift.

During the BBC documentary Prince Philip: The Family Remembers, Eugenie talked about her grandfather’s love of art – an interest that he shared with her – and was an accomplished painter.

Many of his paintings were hung on the walls of royal residences with the Duchess of Cornwall noting that some of his paintings were “rather good”.

And Eugenie told how to celebrate both her and his love of painting, he presented her with one of his own paintings for her wedding.

She said: “He painted me a painting of a bunch of flowers and gave it to me for my wedding.

“It was so nice and it is now sitting in my house in London and I’m so proud of it, you know.”

Philip was at Eugenie’s wedding alongside the Queen when she tied the knot with husband Jack Brooksbank at St George’s Chapel in Windsor in October 2018.

Eugenie wore a stunning Peter Pilotto dress and had bridesmaids and page boys that include Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Mia Tindall and Robbie Williams’ daughter Theodora.

The wedding came after Jack, 35, got down on one knee and popped the question with a £100,000 pink sapphire engagement ring in Nicaragua in 2018 after years of dating.

In February this year, the pair welcomed their first child – a son called August Philip Brooksbank.

The middle name Philip is in honour of Prince Philip, who died at 99 in April.

And in the documentary, Eugenie revealed August got to meet Philip – his great-grandfather – shortly before his death.

Holding back the tears, Eugenie explained: “We named August, August Philip because grandpa has been such a huge, inspiring character in my life.

“I brought little August to come and meet him and told him that we had named him after him and it was such a lovely moment.

“We were very lucky to do that.”
