Royal Family: Prince William’s cheeky comment to Kate Middleton’s dad as they walked up the aisle at the royal wedding

When you get married you want your closest friends and family to witness your big day and join in the celebrations. While sorting guest lists and tables is enough of a headache in itself, it gets a lot more complicated if several of the attendees are well known celebrities or officials who have hectic schedules of their own.

Adding that to the fact that your wedding will be broadcast to millions of people all over the world and it is massively important that each element of the big day is done to the highest standard possible. While we can only imagine the stress that the newly married couple were under on the day, it seems they found a moment to break the ice with a quick joke at the altar.

The couple’s long-awaited engagement was announced by Clarence House on November 16, 2010 and they married at Westminster Abbey on April 29, 2011. Their ceremony was watched by a global audience of over 60 million. Catherine wowed everyone in her £355,000 Alexander McQueen dress which featured a nine-foot train and was made of handmade lace.

Prince William cracked a joke with his father-in-law at the altar

On the occasion of their wedding, they were granted the titles of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, The Earl and Countess of Strathearn and The Baron and Lady Carrickfergus. While all the formalities were observed and the day went off without a hitch, the couple found a minute to crack a few jokes at the altar about the enormity of the day.

In Marcia Moody’s book, Kate: An Autobiography, she recalled that when Prince William greeted Catherine and her father Michael Middleton at the altar he joked: “Just a quiet family wedding, then,” making a joke about the 1,900 guests present in the Abbey and the estimated global audience of 60 million people.

Their wedding was watched by a staggering 60 million people

But Prince William’s conversation wasn’t the only one apparently revealed by lip readers on the day. Marcia also detailed what Prince Harry said to his brother as Kate was making her way up the aisle. She wrote: “Harry looked back as Kate started walking down the aisle and reported back to his brother: ‘Right, she is here now’.

“Harry then said: ‘Well, she looks beautiful, I can tell you that.’ And when the couple set eyes on each other, William murmured to Kate, ‘You look beautiful.'”

With the staggering number of guests the wedding itself understandably came with a very large price tag. But the security topped the list as the most expensive and brought the total cost to around £30 million.

However, the Palace later confirmed that the Royal Family had paid for the core aspects of the wedding with personal funds, including the church service, the music, flowers, decorations and the following reception.
