Siouxland couple celebrates their 70th wedding anniversary on Valentine’s Day

ALLEN, Neb. (KTIV) – Valentine’s Day is an extra special holiday for Allen, Nebraska’s Courtland and Darlene Roberts. This Monday also marked their 70th wedding anniversary!

So you might be wondering: what’s their secret?

“Just do what I’m told,” said Courtland.

The Roberts met when they were just in high school. However, they didn’t become sweethearts until after their graduation.

“Well, I had gone to country school for 8 years, and then I came to Allen High School,” said Darlene. “And I had to walk a mile and a half to catch a bus to be transported to the Allen school. And that’s where I met Court. We never really got to be, I guess, ‘going steady,’ or anything, because we were just good friends.”

After attending Wayne State College, Darlene came home to find that Courtland had joined the family business.

“He worked on a farm for different farmers, and, ‘course, he also worked for my dad.”

Soon after, they started dating and never looked back. One of their favorite things to do together?

“Square dancing,” said Darlene. “We square danced for 40 years.”

They had three sons together and still reside in Allen to this day. While there was no square dancing nowadays, they made sure to celebrate their anniversary with a quiet lunch and cake at the Allen Senior Center.
