What better way to start Women’s History Month than with the acquisition of a women-led comedy feature. This is the case with the mega-media conglomerate Sony, which just earned the global rights to My Ex-Friend’s Wedding after a competitive bidding war for the project per a Variety exclusive. The upcoming projection also announced the names attached to the feature on Friday with comic Megan Stalter, SNL breakout star Chloe Fineman, Oscar-winner Ariana DeBose, and industry heavyweight Amanda Seyfried tapped as the core ensemble.

Per My Ex-Friend’s Wedding official synopsis, the film follows four childhood best friends who spring into action when they get a voicemail from another former best friend on the eve of her wedding day. To stop her from making the worst mistake of her life, they band together and attempt to rekindle their old bond.

“We spit out our tea at the hilarious and heartfelt script for My Ex-Friend’s Wedding and Kay’s vision for it had us wanting to pick up the phone to call all our ex-friends,” mentioned Joe Matukewicz, Sony Pictures Head of Worldwide Acquisitions and Stage 6 Films .

Daisy Jones and the Six author Taylor Jenkins Reid co-penned the script with Ashley Rodger. Comedic veteran Kay Cannon additionally contributed revisions to the script and has been brought on board to direct. Global CEO and co-founder Stacey Snider will produce under the banner of Sister alongside Deb Hayward. Additional producers include Circle of Confusion’s Brad Mendelsohn and Katie Abbott, and K&L Productions’ Cannon and Laverne McKinnon. Both writers (Rodger and Reid) will also serve as producers for the film.

In an official statement to Variety, Snider expressed her sentiments about the newfound partnership with Sony for My Ex-Friend’s Wedding.

“We at Sister are thrilled to partner with Sony Pictures on this comedy about the power of enduring female friendship. My Ex-Friend’s Wedding is a testament to the creative vision of Taylor, Ashley and Kay, whose touching and hilarious script has attracted an all-star cast of amazing actresses.”

Production is expected to begin summer 2023. More details about the forthcoming film are expected to be released in the coming months.

Taylor Jenkins Reid Is Also The Mastermind Behind Daisy Jones and the Six

The announcement of Sony’s acquisition of My Ex-Friend’s Wedding comes on the same day as the premiere of another Taylor Jenkins Reid project. Though Daisy Jones and the Six was adapted for television by frequent partners Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, the original story comes from the eponymous novel by Reid. The acclaimed 2019 novel is just one of several book adaptations that will come from Reid over the next few years with The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo heading to Netflix and Malibu Rising’s development currently in the works.

In 2019, Reid told the story of how Daisy Jones and the Six came to be for Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine Book Club. As written by Reid in the article, the story drew inspiration from the renowned rock band, Fleetwood Mac.

“Two years ago, when I decided I wanted to write a book about rock ‘n’ roll, I kept coming back to that moment when Lindsey watched Stevie sing Landslide. How it looked so much like two people in love. And yet, we’ll never truly know what lived between them. I wanted to write a story about that, about how the lines between real life and performance can get blurred, about how singing about old wounds might keep them fresh. Even after copious amounts of research about Fleetwood Mac and a host of other duos and bands, I’m still taken with that moment between them. I can’t help but marvel at the idea that, despite everything they’d been through, Stevie and Lindsey still loved each other then. Or how, despite what it looked like to us all, they no longer did. I know I’ll never know the answer. And I suppose, if I’m being realistic, there isn’t one.”
