‘Taking the plunge’: Canterbury couple take bungy jump to celebrate their marriage

In a suit and wedding dress with shining rings on their fingers, a Canterbury couple clutched onto each other as they leapt – literally – into married life.

The 35-metre bungy jump over the Waiau River near Hanmer Springs “seemed like forever”, Danielle Stevens said.

Aaron and Danielle Stevens did the jump right after exchanging vows on the historic Ferry Bridge at Hanmer Springs Attractions on Friday.

It was Danielle Stevens’ first bungy jump, which was now ticked off her bucket list.

“It was good … [but] we wouldn’t be in a hurry to do it again,” she said.

The couple, who live in Darfield, had planned to get married in January to mark the three-year anniversary of when they first met.

However, with family members in Australia and the Covid-19 pandemic casting a shadow of uncertainty on their plans, Danielle Stevens suggested they “do something different”.

Three weeks later, the pair were married, and it would be a moment they never forget.

Stevens said they were told by the instructors that no-one had ever been married on the bungy platform bridge – “let alone in a dress”.

“I was going to jump with my flowers,” she said.

With the instructors and photographer supportive of their plans and a clear sky above, the day “couldn’t have been better”.

Stevens said the couple planned to have an all-day barbecue to celebrate their original wedding day next year. A honeymoon would be next on the cards, but was yet to be planned.
