The Flower House brings arrangements, gifts to downtown Holland

HOLLAND — Molly Kemink has officially opened her full-service flower studio on Ninth Street in downtown Holland.

The Flower House has strong roots, beginning when Kemink’s passion for floral arrangements blossomed during her childhood in the suburbs of Chicago.

Kemink moved to Holland when she was a preteen, though she returned to Chicago after graduating from Holland High School to pursue a degree in social work. In that time, she worked for a local florist and honed her skills.

After the pandemic hit, Kemink left college and decided to pursue a career as a florist. She earned her certification through The Floral Design Institute and returned to Holland to establish her independent wedding flower business — but her dream to have her own full-service shop remained.

On Tuesday, Nov. 16, that dream was fulfilled at 25 W. Ninth St.

“It’s been good,” Kemink said. “It’s been busy. This first day has gone by really fast.”

The walls in the storefront have been repainted, and new furniture, rugs and decorations have been brought in. The store features a custom-built cooler for flowers and mostly new lighting.

The boutique offers wedding, funeral and custom flower arrangements, and will eventually have seasonal subscriptions on a weekly, biweekly or monthly basis. Shoppers will also find a selection of greeting cards, candles, jewelry and other gifts.

Kemink’s shop is the latest in a string of recent openings downtown, including clothing boutiques Laurel & Jack and The Poppy Peach and eatery OI Asian Bistro. More openings are expected in the coming weeks, including Dutch Village Downtown and Bowerman’s on Eighth.

Meanwhile, several ground-floor vacancies — including the former Crust 54, Superior Sport Store, half of Alpenrose Restaurant and half of Teerman’s — remain unfilled.

The Flower House is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesdays-Fridays and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays.
