Metz recently teased the upcoming timeline for future episodes.

At the end of the This Is Us Season 5 finale, a flash-forward scene follows Kevin (Justin Hartley) as he practices a toast for a wedding. Then as the scene continues, Kate emerges in a wedding dress, and she reveals that she’s getting married for the second time. But she isn’t renewing her vows with Toby.
Rather, Kevin runs into Phillip, Kate’s co-worker, inside the wedding venue. Then Phillip says he’s Kevin’s future brother-in-law. Of course, this means that Phillip and Kate get married in the future.

Despite the massive shocker in This Is Us Season 5, the sixth and final season hasn’t shown Kate and Toby in complete shambles. The NBC drama also hasn’t highlighted how Phillip and Kate fall in love yet. Granted, we’re only a few episodes into the new season. But according to Metz, Kate’s love journey won’t begin early on in season 6.
When speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Metz answered how soon Kate and Phillip’s romance as well as Kate and Toby’s downfall will start.
“Not too early,” Metz said. “[In] the early episodes of the season, she’s getting to know him and seeing things that she didn’t remotely understand about Phillip. You can see them getting along, but there’s definitely no romance — yet.”
She continued, “The episode that I got to co-write, which is [episode] 9, which is Kate’s episode — that’s going to be a massive turning point for Kate and Toby.”

For now, This Is Us fans will have to wait and see how Kate and Phillip’s love story plays out in season 6. Naturally, many viewers are worried about the two, considering how caring and loving Toby is toward Kate. The worry is also amplified when thinking back on Phillip’s not-so-pleasant first impression. That said, it seems like Geere believes Phillip can make Kate happy.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the new This Is Us cast member revealed that Kate and Phillip’s relationship remains professional until it turns at “some point.” And while the actor was unable to confirm why they actually connect, he claimed Kate isn’t in a “bad relationship” in the future.
“Whether that is connected with the collapse of the marriage to build up another, I don’t know,” Geere said. “But I do know that from that flash-forward scene, she ends up happy. So she’s not a bad relationship. She’s with the guy that she wants. I just hope I can portray that guy.”
