Why Sarah Hyland Would Have Called Off Her Wedding

When Sarah Hyland and Wells Adams got married on August 20, 2022, at Sunstone Winery in Santa Ynez, California, it was a magical day straight out of a fairy tale. From Jesse Tyler Ferguson officiating the ceremony to a romantic candlelit reception, the couple’s vision came to life. Before they said “I do,” the Modern Family star had one specific request for their big day: an emotional processional.

During an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, on November 30, 2022, host Kelly Clarkson asked Hyland whether it was true that she threatened to call off her wedding to the Bachelor in Paradise bartender if he didn’t cry while she walked down the aisle. Hyland answered with a straightforward “yes,” to which Clarkson responded, “You wanted real emotion. You wanted to go there. Deep.” On the show, Hyland elaborated upon her conversation with Adams while they were planning their nuptials. “I actually specifically verbatim said, ‘If I don’t see you crying when I walk down the aisle, I’m turning around,’” she joked.

Luckily, she got her wish. The show cut to a photo of Adams crying while he waited for his future wife to meet him at the altar. “And he did cry,” Hyland exclaimed as the image popped up on the screen.

On the big day, the Love Island host waltzed down a rose-lined aisle in the vineyards while linking arms with her dad. Once she joined Adams at the altar, which was decorated with flowers and lanterns, Ferguson conducted the ceremony in front of a star-studded crowd, including several Modern Family cast members like Sofia Vergara, Ariel Winter, Nolan Gould, and Julie Bowen. They wiped away tears while listening to a sweet message from Ferguson and followed a hand fasting ritual to honor Hyland’s Irish and Scottish heritage.

For the ceremony, the bride sported an ivory silk off-the-shoulder Vera Wang ball gown with a sweetheart neckline, a pleated bodice, and a dramatic slit while the groom kept it classic in a black tuxedo.

After swapping vows, they continued the celebration at an outdoor reception, adorned with pink and orange flowers, greenery, and candles. For the next phase of festivities, Hyland changed into her second Vera Wang piece—an off-the-shoulder lace trumpet gown. The bride made one more outfit change for the after-party, which was a Galia Lahav silk gown with a thigh-high slit.

A couple of days after the duo made it official, they announced the exciting news on Instagram with a joint post. “✨8.20.22✨,” the caption said.

Adams and Hyland first started dating in October of 2017 after the Geek Charming actress slid into the Bachelor franchise star’s DMs. On July 7, 2019, Adams popped the question on the beach with an oval-shaped ring. They recently hit the five-year mark in their relationship.
