Audiences are wondering if there will be a Season 2 of Netflix’s whimsical gardening competition The Big Flower Fight for viewers to escape into.
The Big Flower Fight debuted on Netflix in May 2020, giving audiences a welcome escape from the COVID-19 pandemic raging around the world. Critics were lukewarm about the reality competition series, but fans couldn’t get enough of the fantastical gardening adventure that followed in the footsteps of similar international hits like The Great British Baking Show and The Great British Sewing Bee.
Now almost two years after Season 1 ended, viewers remain hungry for more and still wondering what the streaming giant has in store for the cult hit series. Will a third season ever grow on the streamer or has it joined the growing list of Netflix series that have simply disappeared?
What Is Netflix’s The Big Flower Fight?
The Big Flower Fight is reminiscent of The Great British Baking Show. But instead of creating confectionary masterpieces, teams of two compete to craft larger-than-life floral sculptures ranging from giant insects to whimsical fairytale sets. Actress and comedian Natasia Demetriou of What We Do in the Shadows fame co-hosts with fellow actor and comedian Vic Reeves from comedy duo Reeves & Mortimer. The grand prize winners get the opportunity to feature their designs in London’s world famous Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew.
The contestants’ backgrounds are interestingly varied. Landscape architects, wedding florists and houseplant consultants are common on the show. But a handful of them — like the fashion designer and art curator — are seemingly out of their element. Even those that have impressive backgrounds have struggled with the size and scope of the challenges; the wedding florists have only worked with cut flowers, for example. Kristen Griffith-VanderYacht, owner and creative director of landscape company Wild Bloom, judges the wondrous creations with a rotating guest judge each episode.
Does The Big Flower Fight Have a Season 2?
Unfortunately, Netflix has yet to announce any plans for the future of The Big Flower Fight. The streaming giant has been known to cancel series with little notice, even while there is still strong critic and audience interest. The OA, Glow, American Vandal and even Marvel properties like Daredevil and Luke Cage have all been famously axed after two or three seasons. With Netflix’s aggressive growth strategy, the company often avoids investing in series long-term to keep existing viewers, instead favoring the creation of new content to attract new subscribers.
Yet the demand for light and fluffy escapist content has skyrocketed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Even controversial shows like Emily in Paris have been greenlit for additional seasons. It’s possible that The Big Flower Fight has faced COVID-related delays in production, but Netflix hasn’t confirmed the show will return for a Season 2.
Season 1 of The Big Flower Fight is currently streaming on Netflix.
