Elsie Roberta Lammert

GREENWOOD

Elsie Roberta Lammert, age 98, passed away peacefully at her Greenwood home on June 22, 2021. Elsie was born in Arcadia, Missouri, on September 28, 1922. Her parents were Alexander and Eliza (Stumbaugh) Gordon. Elsie graduated from Central High School in St. Louis in 1939 and received an A.A. Degree from Harris Teacher’s College in St. Louis in 1941.

At her sister’s wedding Elsie met her future husband Harry who was the groom’s brother. Harry and Elsie were married on August 19, 1942. Two brothers marrying two sisters made family gatherings even more fun as their children shared the same grandparents.

During World War II, Elsie worked in munitions factory in St. Louis while her Harry served in the European Theater. After the war they built a house on State Road 135 in White River Township, and they lived there for over 40 years. After completing her college education at Indiana Central College (UINDY) in 1960, Elsie taught first and second grade for 21 years at the Center Grove and North Grove Elementary Schools, and fondly remembered all of her students. With her green thumb, she grew white sweet corn, huge tomatoes, and black raspberries. She made an incredibly delicious black raspberry pie, coffee cake, and chocolate chip cookies. Elsie was one of the best age group bowlers in Indiana in her early retirement years, a competitive ping pong player up to the age of 95, as well a member of Ding-a-Ling square dance group in Trafalgar during the 1980’s. In her retired years Elsie treasured traveling and going to elder learning retreats with her husband and her siblings. Elsie enjoyed watching sports on tv and loved cheering on her grandchildren and great grandchildren at their basketball and volleyball games. She always had a book nearby, was always up for card games, and trips to the casino, which she considered her most pleasurable hobby. Video poker was her mainstay. One year she did quite well at the casino and bought a pontoon boat for fishing. While she enjoyed fishing both at Lake Monroe and in the shared backyard pond at her Copperfield North residence, Elsie would joke that fishing sometimes interfered with her gambling hobby.

Elsie was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Harry Lammert, her son and daughter-in-law Steven & Andrea (Whitaker) Lammert, her brother Alexander Reyburn Gordon Jr. and sister Julia (Gordon) Lammert. She is survived by two sons, Michael Lammert of Manhattan Beach, CA and Dr. Gary (Nina) Lammert of Palm Beach Shores, FL, 9 grandchildren, and 21 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be at the G. H . Herrmann Greenwood Funeral Home, 1605 South S.R. 135, Greenwood, Indiana from 4:00pm to 7:00pm on Friday, June 25, 2021. The celebration of life will be at the same location at 10:00am on Saturday, June 26, 2021.
