A Hamilton couple have been celebrating 50 years of married life together as family gathered for the happy couple.

John and Jean McLean toasted their golden anniversary in style as John had 50 yellow roses delivered to his wife on Friday, before a gathering on Saturday at Eddlewood Bowling Club to mark the occasion.

The pair were married at Hamilton Old Parish Church on June 25, 1971 before holding the reception at the Barley Bree, now known as John Carrigan’s Eating House, where they still return to this day.

John finally plucked up the courage to ask Jean to marry him in August 1969 and went ring shopping together before an engagement party in Jean’s parents’ house in Clydesdale Avenue.

The couple stayed in the Avonbridge hotel the night of their wedding and were up early to catch a train to Aberdeen the next morning for a week’s honeymoon up north.

Two years later, John and Jean began their family when they had son Alex and five years later, their daughter Anne, who both also had two children each with John and Jean now proud grandparents to Megan, 25; Ciara, 23; Sophia, 6; and Riley, 2.

John says if Jean’s happy, he’s happy and says he never lets her go to sleep without kissing her goodnight.
