Internet commenters were quick to rally around one man who, with the help of his best man, sought revenge on his parents and older sister.
In a viral Reddit post published on r/AmITheA**hole, Redditor u/Savings-Pattern3614 (otherwise referred to as the original poster, or OP) detailed decades spent living in his sister’s shadow and revealed the final straw that forced him to stand up for himself—digitally.
Titled, “[Am I the a**hole] for not taking down my video that was a gift from my best man?” the post has received more than 14,500 upvotes and 2,000 comments in the last six hours.
“My parents for years [have canceled] on me last [minute] because of my sister,” OP began. “They have missed both major and smaller events in my life because of her melt downs.”
Continuing to explain that he was suspicious of how his sister would overshadow his wedding, the original poster said that on the morning of, he received a fateful voicemail informing him that his sister’s dog was sick, and that his parents would be absent—per usual.
The original poster also said that, after his suspicions were confirmed, his best man immediately jumped into action.
“He took my phone then went to my fiancée and asked if he could post a video of our wedding as a gift,” OP wrote. “The post’s caption was ‘My best friend. He is an amazing person even if his parents NEVER showed up for him.
“[The] video was still pictures of us next to [my wife’s] parents, me on the dance floor, cutting the cake,” OP continued. “The sound behind the video was my mom’s voicemail explaining how they couldn’t come because [of] my sister’s dog.
“I came home a week later to hundreds of messages…my dad told me to take down the video [and] that they will make it up to me and my wife for not coming,” OP added. “I told him I would take down the video when he made up missing my wedding.”
At weddings featuring groomsmen, the best man plays an integral role in ensuring the marrying couple’s big day goes as smoothly as possible, from beginning to end.
The best man, according to The Knot, is also responsible for keeping wedding party members in order and taking care of any loose ends that may come up.
“The best man is often in charge of the groomsmen, as he plans the bachelor party, helps them dress for the wedding, and even organizes their transportation to the ceremony,” The Knot asserts. “Above all, he is there to support the groom.”
Support—while vague—can take many forms, including social media jabs at parents who prioritize their daughter’s dog over their son’s wedding.

Throughout the comment section of the viral Reddit post, Redditors commended the original poster’s best man for posting the controversial wedding video and commended OP for leaving the video up.
Redditors also took aim at the original poster’s parents, remaining adamant that the video was a much-needed taste of their own medicine.
“[Not the a**hole],” Redditor u/SnazzySusieQ wrote in the post’s top comment, which has received more than 24,000 upvotes. “The truth hurts sometimes and your parents & sister just got whammied! Your friend is AWESOME.”
“Seconded!” Redditor u/BellesNoir chimed in, receiving nearly 8,000 upvotes. “They skipped your wedding with one seriously pathetic excuse, let them feel the effects of that.”
Redditor u/Pinetree218, whose comment has received more than 6,000 upvotes, offered a similar response.
“They were finally called out on their blatant favoritism and they obviously didn’t take it well,” they wrote. “Don’t make them your first priority when you clearly aren’t theirs.”
“They didn’t have a good reason to miss it, and they’re rightfully mortified,” Redditor u/NotTwitchy echoed. “They made the bed, they can lie in it.”
